Our Indonesian origin

To celebrate the arrival of our second container, we thought we would journey through our collaboration with Indonesian artisans.

Visiting style destinations and treasure hunting the perfect additions to Villa Lane’s holiday-inspired collection is nothing short of a dream come true for husband and wife owners, Rochelle and Simon Potts. Venturing through hidden villages in Bali, visiting the artisans in rattan workshops, sourcing and designing is all at the heart of the Villa Lane brand and journey.

We’ve interviewed Rochelle about what’ s behind their beloved collection and talk all things travel, family and what drives their business.

Rochelle, you were previously in the finance industry and Simon is an electrician. How did Villa Lane start?

We have always been keen renovators. Simon is a jack-of-all-trades and I love interior design. Together, we have renovated 3 homes since having our 3 children. The goal in all of our renovations has been to create open space living in a practical and relaxed way. We would travel to Indonesia often with family, stay in beautiful villas, return home and try to recreate elements of those villa-style designs in our own homes.

We decided to take a leap of faith and start sourcing our own products in the holiday-inspired style we had always enjoyed overseas. Newcastle had limited furniture options in this style, and we wanted to bring the relaxed island vibes home for everyone to enjoy.

What inspires you on a day-to-day basis?

I get excited when people come into the store and fall in love with a product. I have hand picked these items in the hope people will love them like I do. Also, when our customers send us photos of our products styled in their own homes – it just makes me so happy and motivated.

I’m also inspired to keep learning, traveling and sourcing in different countries. Taking my kids along for the small business ride and teaching them not to be scared to create their own way of living.

One thing you cannot live without at home?

Wine, haha

What is your favourite piece in this collection?

It has to be the rattan Lembongan chairs. We first saw these chairs on the Island of Lembongan and dreamt of bringing them home with us. Designed for relaxation, they are so curvy and comfortable. When we started sourcing products for Villa Lane, these were at the top of the list. We then went through various samples to get this particular shape right. Due to the sample process taking longer than expected, they missed the first container, which was disappointing. However, they have now arrived and they are perfect. Worth the wait!
